BOAT BUILDING

Building a wooden boat is a surprisingly easy and an enjoyable experience for people of all ages (8–80+).  With the help of your instructors you need no previous wood working experience.

Boat Building Vacation provides you with workshop space, tools, and an enthusiastic guide to mentor you through the boat-building process.  Our aim is to help you build your own boat that will accompany you on future adventures, while having the satisfaction of knowing you built it yourself.  We want you to leave camp rested and rejuvenated, with new skills, new friends, and great memories!

If it is so easy, then how do I do it?

Before arriving you will choose and purchase your desired boat kit. Spend some time looking through the boat selection page to find the boat that will best suit your needs. During the building process, the main scheduling constraint is the drying time required between resin applications. This means that some days you will work for 4 hours and then have “down time” until the next day. Other days you will work a full day, but have the next day off as everything dries. Your exact schedule will depend on what type of boat you are building. In general, we recommend working about six hours a day on your boat. The rest of the day can be spent relaxing and enjoying cottage-based activities, or exploring local attractions.

The stitch and glue process

Since the new stitch and glue process and new boat designs have been created over the past twenty years, wooden boat building has become a revolutionized process available to all. Dozens of companies provide precut kits in a variety of designs. Assembling the precut kit basically involves:
•joining the side panels to create the length of your boat
•attaching the side panels and deck with copper wire
•applying layers of thickened epoxy and fiberglass to create a rigid hull
The process results in an incredibly light weight, yet rigid boat that is strong enough to withstand surf, beach landings, and collisions.

Your workshop space

The workshop is large enough to build three 22+ foot long boats at one time or several small dories in an above ground cellar space overlooking the lake. The space has air filtration and heat sources to decrease drying time. Each work area has saw horses and work benches for ease of construction. All the tools needed for construction are included in the tuition and materials cost, including brushes, sanders, hand tools, squeegees, drills, saws, respirators, and rubber gloves.BOATSELECTION.htmlshapeimage_2_link_0
