Would I enjoy this type of vacation?
•Most likely, if you:
•are enthusiastic and like learning new skills
•enjoy boats and being on the water
•want to learn how to row, sail, or kayak
•enjoy swimming and other freshwater activities
•are looking for a fun, family-friendly vacation
•appreciate a relaxing, lakefront getaway close to all the amenities of a large town
•want a comfortable “base” from which to explore Maine’s attractions
Why are there no assigned dates for this summer?
This is going to be a busy summer. In order to best accommodate people’s interests this summer we have decided to only provide boat building sessions for individuals during a schedule that we have worked out on an individual basis. This means that often the nine days will not be consecutive, but instead they will be over a scattering of flexible dates throughout the summer. Call or email with your interest and we can find the best dates to accommodate your schedule throughout the summer.
What if I don’t have 9 days to spend? Can I do it in less time?
We recommend the full 9 days for an optimal experience. Due to a variety of schedules this summer we may recommend more or less working days depending on the boat you choose to build. Please contact us to discuss options, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
Can I commute instead of stay overnight?
We are willing to discuss all options on an individual basis. Please call to discuss your interest. If you choose to not stay overnight your accommodation and food cost will be waived. However we will add a cost of $300 to cover the extra workshop, instruction, materials, and snacks costs that are normally absorbed in the accommodations fee.
Can my family come with me even if they are not wanting to build a boat?
We encourage that everyone who is at BBV spend some time on building a boat. I think you will be surprised how there is an option for everyone. Either other people in your party can build their own boat, or you can all work on one project together. If your partner does not wish to boat build, we still think they will have a very enjoyable time. There is plenty to do at the cottage and in the surrounding area. Depending on the number enrolled in the course, there may be an option that you can rent the whole cabin out for the 9 days for your family. Childcare is not provided. However you must have someone to supervise your child while you are boat building. If anyone wishes to join you, but not boat build, that would be fine, but they still need to pay for accommodation and food. There is also a maximum total accommodation number so it will depend on other reservations for your selected dates.
How do I take my boat home with me?
Ideally you have driven to the cottages and you can car top it home. We recommend using a roof rack; alternatively, you can purchase foam car top barriers and cam straps. Please make sure to specify in the amenities questionnaire if you will be needing to purchase foam barriers and straps at the course to ensure that we have an adequate supply. Also there is the option to mail the boat home. The price for this option varies depending on which boat you are mailing. In general the price is about $500. Contact me for greater detail about shipping the boat you are wanting to build.
What if I can’t take my boat away?
You can leave it at the Boat Building Vacation to be used by you again next year, you can donate it to the many boat charities in Maine, or you can try to sell it. If you can arrange for transportation at a later date in the season, BBV is happy to store it for you until this time.
How far is it to post office, bank, grocer, farm stand?
Although Boat Building Vacation feels blissfully remote, it is actually only a 5 to 10 minute drive to all amenities!
What is the nearest airport?
Portland International airport is a 50 minute drive from BBV. Bangor International airport and Boston Logan airport are both a 2 1/2 hour drive away. You can also take public busses to Lewiston, Maine. We recommend you bring or rent a car during your vacation. However if you wish we can arrange for transport from both the Portland International airport, or from the Lewiston Bus terminal. Find direct and non-stop flights to Portland, Maine (PWM) HERE.

Do you allow dogs?
Most likely yes. But be aware that they will need to be on lead or in your control at all times. It will need to be a very friendly dog and we will need to know details about your dog before you arrive. Please contact us to discuss your situation, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. BBV has a very friendly non shedding labradoodle named Sashi that will fetch endlessly.
Can I bring and stay in my RV?
Yes. But be aware that it is a bumpy mile and a half narrow dirt road to access the cottage. People have brought their RVs to the cottage before, but they had a pickup truck powerful enough to bring it up steep hills. Also there are no hookups available. When staying at the cottage in the RV you will pay the fees for alternative tent site accommodation.
Can I attend if I have special physical or psychological needs?
Unfortunately the cottages are not wheel chair friendly. For other disabilities, please contact us so we can evaluate the individual needs. We will do our best to accommodate you.
Can I bring younger children, or a larger family group?
If your group has 4 to 7 people, or if you’re children are under the age of 8, you will need to book an entire cottage for your party, or stay in the secluded wooded tent sites. The maximum number for a cottage is 7 people. The 9-day rental fee for the Sunset Cottage is $1000. The 9-day rental fee for the Main Lodge is $1400.
What do I need to bring with me?
Most importantly you should bring old clothing that you do not mind getting covered in epoxy. Secondly you need to bring warm clothing, as evenings can be chilly. We will include a list of recommended things to bring with you in the pre course packet.
There is also beautiful local watercolor paintings available for sale through BBV. Please see available paintings at www.raycurran-artwork.com
